The Tarr & Wonson Copper Paint Company, through several iterations of evolving partnerships, was established by that name in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1863 through an agreement of co-partnership between Augustus Wonson and James Tarr. The company manufactured a patented copper-based anti-fouling paint for boat bottoms.
Other paint companies claimed to have rights to the manufacture of copper-based boat paint, however, Tarr & Wonson believed that its process was unique. Through the latter half of the 19th century, Tarr & Wonson strenuously prosecuted other paint brands for trade mark and patent infringement.
Augustus and Susan (Story) Wonson resided on Rocky Neck in Gloucester from which location they insured their property as demonstrated by a number of insurance policies included in this collection. Augustus died in 1894 and Susan died in 1918. Documents related to the settlement of their estates are included in this collection.

Although not every document in this collection can be definitively classified without some degree of overlap, the papers deal with six topics: 1) Tarr & Wonson’s international copyrights; 2) patent infringement lawsuits; 3) Patents of other paint manufacturers; 4) corporate agreements and settlements; 5) the early 20th century Rocky Neck real estate of Augustus Wonson and his family; and 6) the estates of Susan (Story) and Augustus Wonson.
The papers were presented to the Cape Ann Museum en masse in no particular order by Descendants/relatives of company founders. The papers were long ago folded into thirds and cannot lay flat. Many were written in pencil and the text is faint.
Tarr & Wonson prosecuted a number of patent infringement lawsuits against other manufacturers of copper paint. An attempt has been made to categorize documents according to the appropriate lawsuit, however there are a number of cross-suits and, as well, use of the same expert in several different suits. Many documents are in draft form, thus may lack titles or dates. Others are copies, some undated, of original documents. Because so many pieces are undated and/or are fragmentary, no attempt has been made to sort documents chronologically within each Series.
Where documents were bundled together in marked envelopes, the choice was made to leave these associations of documents as found, though it’s not always clear how they relate to each other. The researcher is advised to search by the defendant’s name. Throughout the collection for example, “Hayes” analyzed paints in several suits, represents the plaintiff in some suits, is a defendant in others, and filed his own suit against Tarr & Wonson thus relevant documents are located throughout the collection.

The earlier documents and letters cover the period during which the Tarr & Wonson Copper Paint Company was established and marketed (1850-1900). This was the period during which Tarr & Wonson initiated numerous suits to protect its copyrighted paint can labels and its process of manufacturing copper paint. The later documents through 1925 reflect the personal property and estates of Augustus Wonson (1817-1894) and his wife, Susan (Story)Wonson (1828-1918).
