When viewing a document, select or tab into the image viewer and use the following controls to manipulate the image.


  • Move up: w or [up arrow]
  • Move down: s or [down arrow]
  • Move left: a or [left arrow]
  • Move right: d or [right arrow]
  • Return to centre: 0
  • Zoom in: = or [shift] + w or [shift] + [up arrow]
  • Zoom out: - or [shift] + s or [shift] + [down arrow]
  • Rotate clockwise: r
  • Rotate counterclockwise: R
  • Flip horizontally: f

    The CAM Library & Archives is home to many digital resources, including online finding aids, the CAM Video Vault and corresponding lecture transcripts and finding aids, CAM Lectures on Vimeo, online archival exhibitions, Cape Ann ARTWaves, the Maud / Olson Library, and more.

    Dating to the 1980's, watch video lectures about stories and subjects related to the rich history of Cape Ann. 

    Fitz Henry Lane Online

    Fitz Henry Lane Online is a freely-accessible interactive and interdisciplinary online resource created by the Cape Ann Museum. The website is organized around a catalog of the paintings, drawings, and lithographs of nineteenth-century American painter Fitz Henry Lane (1804–1865).

    BIPOC Research

    Explore digital resources at the CAM Library & Archives related to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color on Cape Ann, including recorded lectures, online newsletters, digital exhibitions, and more.

    CAM Connects

    CAM Connects is an ongoing virtual programming series highlighting important stories and content areas from the Museum's collections.

    The Maud/Olson Library

    The Maud/Olson Library is a non-circulating collection that reflects Olson’s deep devotion to Gloucester and New England and ultimately to the planet as a whole. In 2021, the Writers Center gifted the collection to the Cape Ann Museum Library & Archives. It resides within the Janet & William Ellery James Center at the Cape Ann Museum Green.

    Unfolding Histories: Cape Ann Before 1900

    Unfolding Histories: Cape Ann Before 1900 illuminates the area’s wideranging stories from Native American life to the first European settlers in the 1640s, the temperance movement, African American history and civil rights, women’s history, the advent of railroad and mass transportation as well as work, literary, and cultural life during Cape Ann’s early years.

    The Cape Ann Museum Library & Archives houses a seemingly endless collection of unique and rich manuscripts, photographs, books, maps, and other archival documents from the region’s impressive 400+ year history. This series explores some of the stories from the CAM Library & Archives stacks.

    Cape Ann Museum Portuguese American Photograph Collection, 1882-1970

    Compiled by researchers at UMass Lowell, this collection of photographs from the CAM Library & Archives highlights the seafaring lifestyle of the Portuguese community in Gloucester, MA.

    Cape Ann ARTWaves

    Initially conceived to keep the arts front and center during the Pandemic, the final episode aired January 30, 2023 marking almost three years of interviews by co-producers/co-hosts Kristine Fisher and Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco with over 75 artists, makers, curators, and gallerists.

    Our Internet Archive site contains archived pages of the Cape Ann Museum, various Cape Ann art galleries, the Sawyer Free Library, and several Cape Ann historical societies. 

    Gloucester City Directories 1860-1993

    Sponsored by the Boston Public Library and made possible by the Sawyer Free Library and the Gloucester Lyceum, the Cape Ann Museum's collection of Gloucester City Directories from 1860-1993 was digitized in 2018. The digital collection is hosted on Internet Archive.
