Can you appraise an item for me?
We do not offer appraisals for any type of collection materials. If you are interested in having an item appraised, we recommend reaching out to a professional appraiser. For more information, please email us at library@capeannmuseum.org.
Can I visit the Library and Archive?
Absolutely! Everyone is welcome in the library found in the downtown campus at 27 Pleasant St, Gloucester, MA. Beginning June 30, 2026, the library is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 am to 4:30 pm, and our staff are happy to answer any of your questions. If you have a specific research interest, we ask that you contact us at library@capeannmuseum.org before visiting to allow us time to access any material that may be stored off-site.
Can I check out books from the library?
Unfortunately, we do not allow books to leave the library. However, researchers are welcome to come and browse the library holdings in-person. To search our online catalog and discover what books we have in the library, please visit our Digital Collections Catalog.
Is there a computer I can use in the library?
We have one computer available for public use. The reference computer is available on a first come first serve basis.
How can I donate my belongings to the Library & Archives?

Where can I find archival quality storage solutions for my family heirlooms?
Family heirlooms should be treasured for generations to come. To best protect your personal collections, we recommend using archival grade storage solutions. There are a variety of archival supply companies that provide storage solutions for almost every type of family collection. CAM periodically runs programs on the topic of caring for personal archives.
Can you help me find floor plans or photographs of my home?
The Cape Ann Museum has numerous collection materials related to historic homes. We recommend you start by searching for your address in our Digital Collections Catalog. If you know the names of the families that lived in the home before you, you might also find photos by searching their names. If you have more questions about the history of your home, please email library@capeannmuseum.org and we will assist you.
Can I use a photo from your collection in my research project?
Depending on the type of project you are working on, there may be a reproduction fee associated with the use of an image from our collection. For more information, please review our Rights and Reproductions Policy. If you have any questions, please contact us at library@capeannmuseum.org
