Brief Description: Colony operations materials 1973-2008, newspaper clippings and magazine articles 1951-2010, artist biographies and Colony memorabilia 1970s-2000s, book and walking trail publications and video, 2007-2011. 

The Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC) Collection contains colony business materials, colony memorabilia, program and event materials, as well as artist biographies. The business materials start when the colony incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1973. The records include meeting minutes, budgets, agendas, and colony membership over the years. Materials for some years are stronger than others. The 1970s and 1980s have less material than the 1990s and 2000s. Included in the collection are the grant proposals the colony has applied for to support their programming efforts as well as the materials used to develop two books the colony published.

Newspaper clippings and magazine articles make up the bulk of the collection and cover many topics including artist who worked at the colony, Rocky Neck area events, and the art community on Cape Ann. The articles start in the early 1950s and extend through 2010. The bulk of articles are from the 1990s and 2000s and for the period from 1965-1975 there are no articles. The topical folders contain articles pertaining to the specific title and focus on noncolony related events, but relate to changes on Rocky Neck.

There are photographs on particular events like the Beaux Arts Balls and a Pot Luck Supper included in the collection. There are some general photos of the colony and are scattered in date but the earliest date from the 1970s.

Included in the collection is information on individual artists who worked in the colony. Some artists have resumes, artist statements, and questionnaires while other folders feature newspaper articles on the particular artist. The level of information varies person to person and is more comprehensive for exhibition participants. Please see attached list of artists in the miscellaneous folders.

The collection has strong collection of signage for colony events and programs. The RNAC’s yearly fundraiser Beaux Arts Ball event is strongly represented especially from the 1990s on. Business materials relating to the balls can also be found in the general business materials. Also included are recent (2005 and on) posters and postcards for exhibits. Exhibit materials also feature guest books and artist participation materials.
