The Hyatt-Mayor-Huntington collection focuses on the Mayor, Hyatt, and Huntington family and extended family.  Specifically, the collection gives significant context to Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington’s sister Harriet. A prolific sculptor in her own right, Harriet is often overlooked in comparison to her younger sister Anna. However, sketchbooks in this collection reveal her incredible talent for drawing and painting, alongside a diary fragment shedding light on her sculpture process.  The collection contains photos and journals from her life and of her work, as well as various materials on two of her children. Harriet and Anna’s Mother Audella likely originated the habit of keeping extensive journals. All journals contain well preserved photos, watercolors, and illustrations (predominantly from travels).

A large portion of the collection focuses on the Mayor (originally Maÿer, occasionally spelled Mayer) family which Harriet married into, and their extended family beginning in 18th century Germany. Documents in the collection pertaining to the Mayor’s include family trees specific to the Mayors as well as various other families they married into (such as the Reynolds and the Goldsboroughs). Similarly, on the Hyatt side of the family, there are documents covering families that married into the Hyatt line such as the Beebe’s. Another large branch of the collection includes material from the Mayor side of the family, specifically the men and their publications. Many of these documents (especially in regard to Harriet and her immediate family) connect to Annisquam in Cape Ann.

Annisquam Historical Society, letters of condolence sent to the Hyatt family after the death of Alpheus Hyatt (father to Harriet, Anna, and his son Alpheus) and the death of Alpheus (son of Alpheus and Audella, brother to Harriet and Anna). • Maria H Bray
  • Marion Boyd Allen
  • Francis Darwin (son of Charles Darwin)
  • Alexander Agassiz
  • Willis Boyd Allen
  • Charles E Beecher
  • Charles S Minot
  • Addison Emery Verrill (‘ A. E. Verrill)

Notes:

  • Use of the term journal and diary is interchangeable within this Finding Aid
  • The last name Mayor varies in spelling (Maÿer, Mayer, Mayor). For example, Brantz Mayor (b. 1906) is sometimes referred to as Brantz Mayer, though both are referring to the same person (though Brantz Mayer, born 1809, is also referenced in the collection)
  • Unclear if Ana/Anna Maria (wife of Brantz Mayor) is spelled with two letter “nn”s or just one n. For the sake of consistency, it is spelled with one “n” throughout the finding aid
  • Goldsborough (middle name of Alfred Goldsborough Mayor ) is sometimes spelled “Goldsboro” on labeled photos, but refer to the same family
