Biographical note edited by Ann DeMaine.

Lucy MacDonald DeMaine (1893-1988), a Gloucester native, was involved with the organizing of a World War One (WWI) group of ambulance volunteers known as the American Field Service (AFS) from 1916 to 1920.

The AFS was founded by Gloucester residents A. Piatt Andrew and Henry Sleeper.  “Between 1914 and late 1917 when the United States entered the war, 2,500 volunteer AFS drivers transported more than 500,000 casualties”.

During her time with the AFS, Lucy MacDonald DeMaine worked as a secretary at the Gloucester and Boston headquarters and during 1918-19 at the group’s Paris headquarters. While in Paris, she would briefly meet artist and ambulance driver, Harry DeMaine with whom she would reconnect later in her life and eventually marry.

Both Lucy and her sister Charlotte MacDonald knew A. Piatt Andrew (the group’s founder and leader of the Paris headquarters), as well as Henry Sleeper (manager of recruitment and fundraising in the Boston Area) as stated in the CAM Connects article entitled, “Behind the Scenes of the American Field Service: Lucy & Charlotte MacDonald.” Lucy MacDonald later served as A. Piat Andrew’s assistant during his first term in the US Congress (1920-22).

The collection was given in two batches, the first: Gift of Robert DeMaine, 2017 [Acc. 2017.045] and the second: Gift of Robert & Ann DeMaine, 2018 [Acc. 2018.045]. Once the second gift was finalized, the two portions were combined into this one collection.
