Charles Courtney Curran was born in Kentucky and raised in Ohio. He received art training at the Cincinnati School of Design, the National Academy of Design, the Art Students' League and the Academie Julian in Paris. Very little is known about Curran's time on Cape Ann, which may have been limited to the year 1887. Curran is most closely associated with the Cragsmoor Art Colony in New York's Hudson River Valley.
