Augustus Waldeck Buhler (1853–1920)
Augustus Waldeck Buhler was born in New York City to German political refugees. The family moved to Worcester in 1865, where Buhler began art lessons. He married in 1872 and moved to Boston, continuing his studies under Tommaso Juglaris, a teacher at the Boston Art Club and Rhode Island School of Design. From 1888-1890, Buhler studied in Europe, primarily at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and Academie Julian in Paris.
The Buhlers first summered in Annisquam in 1885, and continued to do so after their return from overseas. In 1898, Buhler opened a studio and school on Rocky Neck in East Gloucester, and actively began to befriend and paint local fishermen. Several examples of such paintings, known for their historical authenticity, are in the museum's Maritime and Fisheries Galleries.
