Ruth Anne Adshead Brown was born June 6, 1930, in Lachine, Quebec, and passed away quietly September 9, 2017, at Essex Park, Beverly, Mass. She was very proud of her Canadian heritage. Ruth was the fourth daughter of the late John Adshead and Vera Mary Woodhead Adshead of England, and sister of Vera Joan Court, Audrey Gavin, and Marjorie Adshead. She will be happily reunited with her much beloved childhood pet, Snubbs, on the other side. She was a member of the Christian Science Church, married J. Herbert Brown on January 28, 1955, in Wellesley Mass., and divorced in 1974. She leaves two daughters, Gail Barbera of Marlborough, and Janet Brown of Gloucester; four grandchildren, Shannon, Anthony, Leila, and Garrett; one greatgrandchild, Emma; and dear family friend, Ted Tysver.
Ruth loved the ocean and moved to Gloucester in the early 1970s. She followed her dream and opened her Rusty Anchor Art Gallery on Pirate’s Lane, 1974 to 1979. She went on to open the Yankee General Gallery, 1979 to 1998, during which time she was also gallery manager for the North Shore Arts Association in Gloucester, 1987 to 1998. She was passionate about all art forms and was instrumental in supporting, mentoring, and furthering many local artists of that time. She enjoyed retirement living in Rockport, Mass.
