Medium: Oil on shellacked cardboard, mounted on canvas
Accession Number: 2018.18.1
Credit Line: Bequest of Tamara Greeman, 2018
Collections: Land and Seascapes
This early work was painted while Stella was a student at Phillips Academy, in Andover, MA. Using Gloucester’s working harbor as his subject, the painting is a study in form, a contemplation of weight and balance. The repetition of shapes and the flatness of the composition foreshadow the direction Stella’s art would take in coming decades as he moved on to experiment with minimalism and hard-edged painting techniques.
