From his obituary in the Gloucester Daily Times on April 6, 2011:
Peter K. Prybot, 63, of Lanesville, husband of Anne Prybot, died on Sunday, April 3, 2011 while out lobster fishing on his boat. Born in Boston on March 14, 1948, he was the son of the late Roman J. and Eleanor T. Prybot. Peter was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1966 and graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a bachelor's degree in Marine Fisheries Biology.
Peter's first book White-Tipped Orange Masts [: Gloucester’s Fishing Draggers] began as a college thesis, for which he interviewed every captain of every boat in the Gloucester dragger fleet. His second book Lobstering off Cape Ann recounts his life as a lobsterman. In his writing, Peter showed his gift of explaining complex fishing-related issues to his readers in a way that they could easily understand, at the same time introducing them to many interesting figures, both local and regional. Peter was also an accomplished photographer who had pictures published in Commercial Fisheries News, National Fisherman, Oceans Magazine, and Gloucester Daily Times. He was a familiar figure on the Gloucester waterfront as he photographed boats, fishermen and fishing-related activities, and gathered material for his columns. (Gloucester Daily Times, 2011)
He explained his love of fishing and the ocean in his book Lobstering off Cape Ann: A Lifetime Lobsterman Remembers: “Although lobstering has largely consumed my life since age twelve and nearly taken it at least once, it’s also given me a livelihood, a hands-on education, a defined and meaningful purpose in life, a unique sense of freedom and pride and a job that I wouldn’t trade for the world.’’
