Above the Fold: Mitch Eagan, 1984-1985
In 1984, Mitch Eagan, a young man eager to grow his passion for art and photography, was hired by the GDT Managing Editor Bill McCulloch to replace Kenn Shrader as staff photographer. Arriving in Gloucester with his wife and their young child in time for the 1984 St. Peter’s Fiesta, Eagan found the community “down to earth, friendly, welcoming, and wonderful." Although his enthusiasm for the job was apparent, the work was demanding, and Eagan recalled that “every other night I slept with an earphone hooked up to the police scanner in the event of fire or other catastrophe.” Eagan left the GDT less than a year after his arrival in 1985 and went next to The Martha’s Vineyard Times.
