Above the fold: Mary Roy, 2004-2011
Mary (Muckenhoupt) Roy started at the Gloucester Daily Times in August 2004 as a part-time photographer. Fresh out of college with a degree in photography from Salem State University, she was successful in landing two part-time photographer positions around the same time, one with the Salem News and the other with the GDT. Roy remembers driving around hoping to capture a compelling moment or scene for her early assignments. It wasn’t long before she found that she excelled at photographing children. No matter what the assignment, she seemed to find a child in the crowd doing something touching or comical. Newspapers are regularly filled with unpleasant stories, so she liked the idea of showing the softer side of life on Cape Ann. Roy soon became full-time at the paper and remained a staff photographer for the GDT until 2011.
