Above the Fold: Cristin Gisler, 1991-1996
Cristin Gisler came to Gloucester in January 1991 to interview for the position of staff photographer at the GDT. Gisler remembers what a privilege it was to work in a profession that centered on community. Each year, getting to know the students passing through school, going to their games, events, and graduation all reinforced the interwoven nature of work for an intensely local newspaper. The biggest event Gisler covered during her time at the paper was the October 1991 No-Named Storm, now better known as the Perfect Storm. Gisler recalls feeling as if she’d stepped into a disaster movie. By 1995, Gisler had entered into a job-share position so she could spend more time with her family and by the summer 1996 she made the difficult decision to depart the GDT, leaving with an extensive portfolio of work, lasting memories, and a deep love for Cape Ann and its people.
